Thanks J-Walk for this idea:
The United States Institute of Peace 2006 Budget: $21,850,000
The Administration’s FY 2006 request of $21.9 million for the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) provides for innovative approaches to human capacity building for peace and working with public and private partners to manage and resolve international conflicts. The budget emphasizes engaging the Muslim world as part of the Administration’s strategy to promote democratization of the broader Middle East to help resolve the region's many problems, most notably Iraq, Afghanistan and Sudan.
The United States Department of Defense 2006 Budget: $419,878,836,000
The FY 2006 budget supports the Global War on Terror (GWOT) by strengthening U.S. defense capabilities and keeping U.S. forces combat ready. It continues to implement lessons learned from ongoing operations in the war -- including the need for flexible and adaptable joint military forces, strong special operations forces, highly responsive logistics, and the best possible intelligence and communications capabilities.
Iraq Gross National Product: $18.2 Billion
For those of us bad at math: The Department of Defense has 19,216 times more money to spend than the Institute of Peace.
